Building Conversations

So you think because you have the ability to hold a conversation in person, on the phone or by email however, when you get onto a Social Network, you seem to lose your noodle. (Don’t fret, your in really good company)

Stop shouting, start listening, seems to be a logical place to start, but with whom do you want to listen to? When you signed up for any of the Social Networks for your organization, yourself, whatever, you were asked to upload some of your “friends” to get you going.

While you may have done this, you may not have thought twice as to why, and what it would do for you. Start by looking at the conversations some of your colleagues, friends, family, customers are having online. Feel the tone of the conversation, how quick, how short and how much information is being let go onto the world.

This is the basics and core of what Social is. It’s like walking into a party and handing everyone your business card and running out (OMMA-was it Scott Monty?). You didn’t take time to even get a good look at their face, much less learn anything about them.

Let’s start there, add in your suggestions below so everyone gets to know you better.

One more thought... Here's a few listening tools for social media:

  • I certainly use Social Mention for those quick hits of information I need without going through an entire Profile build. Love it. Thanks for the others as well.

Listening is the first step in strategy development. Everything else falls in behind that. Social media should be called listening 2.0 not web 2.0.
  • So Listening 2.0 is right on. Thanks.
